Farms Abroad

Photographed by Chua Junting entirely on a Leica Q3

As I stepped onto my extended family’s farm in Hunan, a world of rich traditions unfolded before me. I, a Singaporean photographer, had traveled here to explore the unique lives of pigs reared by each household for sustenance. Each family had their own approach, their own rhythm, shaped by generations of knowledge and care.

Walking through the farm, I marveled at the diverse regimes of breeding. One family nurtured their pigs with a careful diet of local grains, while another infused herbs for health and flavor. In each pen, I discovered stories—the playful piglets frolicking under the watchful eyes of children, the older sows embodying a calm wisdom. Each photograph I took was not just a snapshot; it was a glimpse into the heart of these families and their deep connection to the land.

These pigs are more than livestock; they symbolize resilience and sustenance. In a world where food often comes pre-packaged and faceless, I wanted to capture the intimate relationship between these families and their animals. Each click of the shutter echoed the laughter and labor of my relatives, the pride in their craftsmanship, and the love that goes into raising their stock.

As you view these twenty three images, I invite you to reflect on the stories behind each pig. They remind us of the traditions that bind us to our roots, and the enduring ties of family, culture, and the cycles of life that nourish us all.
