If you want to be practical, you can say that it’s easy to take photos of your own food. But what makes things hard is exactly what makes you stand out from the rest – making these photos good and high quality. Here are three common mistakes that we’ve seen when people host photoshoots for their food.
#1 Not engaging a food stylist
There’s nothing like the peace of mind you get when you can trust someone specialising in making your food look camera-ready. Having a person take care of the tiny details that make the bigger picture, from arranging each ice cube to meticulously slicing the fruits, is integral in order to bring out the best in your food.
There’s no use in having a shoot with great camera equipment, lighting and props, when the star of the show isn’t dressed it’s best.
#2 Not looking for good props
A cheat code in having a great shoot is behind the props and the layout of the background. One way to cut costs and make things easier for you is to have a corporate account under your company’s name with various food service partners and suppliers.
Food service partners and suppliers are the ones who can help you get items for plating, and other kitchen equipment – basically all you need in order to serve your food. By having a corporate account with them, you can engage in one-time product loans and can get props for you shoot free of charge. As long as you return them the way you got them, and in time, of course.
#3 Worrying about portioning
The essence of photography is to capture the best of your food. Other elements come to play, of course. There’s laying out the background, lighting and other photography fundamentals. But representing your food best remains paramount. This means that not all the laws of reality apply in capturing that. More often than not, people stray away from that by wanting to keep the authenticity of how the food will be served, to the point where they compromise the art and direction of the photography.
We’re not saying you should use a picture of italian gelato topped with edible 24k gold flakes to advertise your ice kachang, what we mean is that it’s not always necessary to shoot your food with red plastic bags if you use them for takeaways.
